The atlas of Napoli studies the history and the form of the city, defined by its morphological and typological development. The historical city of Napoli is peculiar by its extremely dense urban structure, consisting of architecturally significant churches, monasteries and palazzi. The atlas investigates in detail the typology of Neapolitan palazzo, which is considered as one of the referential types that defines the character of the historical centre of Napoli. The typological development of the Neapolitan palazzo originates with the Greek residential courtyard typology. In the 15th century, the most prominent typological element ‘portale-facciata’ appeared and the distinct typology was consolidated during the 18th century. The atlas studies these developments and the significance of the Palazzo type for the city of Napoli.
