Metropolitan Madrid, a tribute to the hybrid buildings of the Gran Via

In the beginning of the 20th century, the Gran Vía was carved out of the 17th century city fabric of Madrid. During the period of 1902 until 1940s, a variety of eclectic buildings were built enclosing the Gran Vía. Due to the implementation of cultural activities on this dense urban boulevard, a new typology of buildings, the hybrid buildings, was for the first time introduced in Madrid. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the hybrid buildings along the Gran Vía and reveal the qualities and potentials of these hybrid buildings. The research resulted in the identification of the Madrilenian metropolitan hybrid building type which is unique for the hybrid buildings along the Gran Vía. The research led to the design of a modern Madrilenian metropolitan hybrid building implemented along the Gran Vía.
