The Florentine Workhome

The project starts from a personal observation and fascination for the city’s craftsmanship. Workshops, botteghe in Italian, seemed to be closely connected to the dwellings of the Florentines.

The project revolves around a central research question; how can the Florentine relationship between working and dwelling be defined, and continued?

Backed up by literature research, analysis of a set of case-studies revealed two building types strongly connected to the principle of ‘workhomes’; the terraced house and the palazzo. The design experiment questions the useability of the types on a specific location within the city center and searches for a possible continuity of a traditional workhome.
